TRIG the new NAV/COM

Trig Avionics has announced the new TX56 Nav/Com.

The company is now shipping their slimline TX56 Nav/Com, which completes the Trig stack – ideally suited to GA, experimental and light sport pilot’s needs.

Read below the announcement from TRIG:

This is an important milestone, as the Nav/Com completes the Trig stack product line. The TX56 is a slimline unit, at only 33mm high this makes it easier to install, saving valuable space in any avionics stack.

Trig CEO Andy Davis said, “Trig’s Nav/Com product family has landed. Customers can now order their Nav/Com from our Approved Trig Dealers. We know customers are excited by the TX56’s space saving form factor and its compelling list of pilot friendly features.”

“CUSTOMERS ARE EXCITED BY THE TX56’S SPACE SAVING FORM FACTOR AND ITS COMPELLING LIST OF PILOT FRIENDLY FEATURES.”

The TX56 uses a bright high-resolution display, with the clearest presentation of Nav and Com information. The unit has a customisable frequency database which holds over 200 com and an additional 200 nav frequencies, loaded via a USB stick. Dual Watch allows the monitoring of two com frequencies at the same time. Monitoring of a second Nav VOR is also possible – improving navigational accuracy. Trig’s popular ‘Say Again’ feature is a single touch button which instantly re-plays the last received transmission, meaning you don’t have to transmit, ‘say again’. The Nav/Com includes a two-place intercom, with support for stereo music. All TX56 models have a built-in digital course deviation indicator (CDI). The Nav supports VFR and IFR navigation, including ILS approaches. Trig’s TI106, Course Deviation Indicator is also available, as the ideal panel mounted companion to any TX56 model.

uAvionix tailBeaconX STC

With the upcoming ADS-B mandate in Canada, Maxcraft is excited to share with you the newly approved, economical solution for general aviation and experimental aircraft. We believe the tailBeaconX will be a popular upgrade and compliance path to meet the Canadian satellite-based ADS-B tracking requirements.

uAvionix announced in early April it received the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) and initial Approved Model List (AML) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the revolutionary tailBeaconX 1090 MHz ADS-B transponder.

tailBeaconX is a highly integrated 1090 MHz ADS-B transponder that replaces a rear navigation light by combining it with ADS-B OUT / Mode S transponder, SBAS GPS, antennas, and rear LED position light. The initial STC-AML utilizes the uAvionix AV-30-C multi-function display to be installed as the control head. In this configuration, the AV-30-C is able to leverage the tailBeaconX SBAS GPS for its GPS track display. In the future, uAvionix anticipates adding additional means of control through uAvionix and third-party devices.

tailBeaconX is uniquely designed to meet the challenge of worldwide adoption of both ground and space-based ADS-B for Air Traffic Surveillance, including CANADA’s upcoming mandate over the next few years. NAV CANADA’s performance requirements “can be met either through antenna diversity (the use of a top and bottom antenna) or with a single antenna that is capable of transmitting both towards the ground and up towards satellites.” tailBeaconX is the only non-diversity solution, saving aircraft owners thousands of dollars for equipment and installation as compared to a full diversity system.

The Approved Model List (AML) for tailBeaconX contains over 550 aircraft make and models for which this STC is valid, including most major models from Cessna, Piper, Mooney, Beechcraft, and others. Additional models, including light twins, are expected to be approved in the next months.

For the Canadian market, tailBeaconX will initially be available for 336 models on the FAA AML, whose type certificates were accepted in Canada without the issuance of an equivalent TCCA type certificate (See the TCCA U.S. Eligible Aircraft List). STC validation for an additional 56 models has been filed with Transport Canada and is expected to be approved shortly.

Special Day for Tim Cole

One of Maxcraft’s long time customers and friend, shared his wonderful story with us. Read more below about Tim’s fantastic day.

May 14, 2022

A special day for me! On May 14, 1972, Fifty Years Ago, was the first day I flew CF-BXR a Grumman Goose, G21A serial # 1059. I flew this old girl in 1972/73 for Laurentian Air Services based out of Ottawa. I roamed mostly over Quebec and Labrador. During that time, in addition to landing in numerous lakes, I landed in the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic Ocean & Hudson’s Bay. Today on the anniversary of my very first flight in this airplane we landed in the Pacific Ocean 50 years later to the day of my first flight! This was made possible by Captain Gordon Jenkins, a 26,000 hour veteran West Coast pilot, and Chief Pilot for Wilderness Seaplanes based in Port Hardy, BC. He invited me to ride right seat for him on a ferry flight from Everett, WA (KPAE) to Vancouver (CYVR) and Pitt Meadows (CYPK) in the same airplane, serial #1059 now US registered as N39FG. This beautiful old airplane, built in 1939, is in mint condition and is an award winner at Reno in 2019. It was a wonderful flight with water landings at YVR and YPK. It brought back so many fond memories of years gone by. Well wishers and cameras were bountiful on departure and at each stop. Prior to departure from PAE, I was joined by Allen Stayman of N. Seattle. As a child he and his siblings often rode as passengers in this airplane to their summer holiday camp in the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec. In addition when Allen was a teenager he worked as our dockboy in Northern Quebec in 1970. I hadn’t seen him since then, 52 years earlier. A special thanks to Steve Nunn who provided transport down to PAE in his amphib Cessna 206. Many thanks to Gord Jenkins and the owners of N39FG, it was wonderful experince for an old pilot. May you all have “Tight Floats & Tailwinds.”

Coupled with a full suite of health monitoring and activity tracking features, the D2 Mach 1 offers unmatched utility both in and out of the cockpit.

Enhanced style and utility

Designed for everyday wear, the D2 Mach 1 combines a durable design and premium materials like  sapphire and titanium with a vibrant, sunlight-readable 1.3’’ AMOLED display. Trusted button controls are matched with a responsive new touchscreen interface for dual utility, improving daily smartwatch interaction and access to selections and map features. The watch face includes a UTC pointer, and can also display and help pilots manage multiple time zones, including Zulu time, and a 24-hour clock around the bezel, along with seven customizable data fields.

Leaving your hangar or FBO to head to the gym? Quickly change out the D2 Mach 1 watch straps – available with oxford leather or vented titanium options– with the included QuickFit™ black silicone band.

A dedicated flight system on your wrist

The D2 Mach 1 includes preflight, in-flight and postflight features and tools to
assist pilots in navigation and enhance situational awareness, along with multiband frequency and multi-GNSS support for better and more accurate GPS positioning. Direct-to navigation lets pilots navigate straight to an airport or waypoint in the preloaded worldwide aeronautical database directly from the watch, or choose the Nearest function to activate a direct course to a nearby airport. Pan across the moving map with a touch, and tap on waypoints for more information. Plus, see NEXRAD radar1 overlaid on the route.

The instrument-like horizontal situation indicator (HSI)2 course needle makes it easy for pilots to see if the aircraft is left or right of the desired flight path, and the barometric altimeter can alert when a desired altitude is reached. Aviation alerts like time, distance, altitude and a fuel timer are also available on the D2 Mach 1 during flight.

Know what’s ahead with airport information like runway orientation and wind
components, runway lengths and airport frequencies—all preloaded and easily accessible from the watch. The D2 Mach 1 offers aviation weather reports, including METARs and TAFs that allow pilots to see winds, visibility and barometric pressure and more1 before takeoff. New graphical indications of MOS forecasts for specific airports3, including projections for temperature trends, wind, dewpoint, sky cover, precipitation probability and more, are also available. Customizable notifications can be set for new METAR and TAF reports, so pilots will stay in-the-know when things like destination airport conditions change or when crosswind components exceed a threshold. And in case of emergency, the D2 Mach 1 can show the best glide speed, estimated glide distance and glide time during an engine-related issue, along with a bearing pointer to the nearest airport and a list of alternate airports.

Flight logging is a breeze with the D2 Mach 1, which automatically starts tracking flights on takeoff, then automatically transfers the date, duration, total flight time and route to the user’s flyGarmin.com logbook. Pilots can also seamlessly transfer flight plans from the Garmin Pilot™ app to the D2 Mach 1 and view the list of waypoints included in their route.

Advanced health, wellness and fitness features

With the broadest range of 24/7 health monitoring features available from Garmin, the D2 Mach 1 offers: wrist-based heart rate (with user-configurable alerts for high or low readings), advanced sleep monitoring with sleep score, breathwork activities, fitness age, respiration, Pulse Ox5, all-day stress tracking, hydration, and women’s health tracking. Body Battery™ energy monitoring shows users how “charged” their body is as well as the draining effects of stress and exercise. During a flying activity, pilots can quickly access the health stats menu to track their heart rate, Pulse Ox, respiration, Body
Battery and more. Plus, a new Health Snapshot™ feature logs a two-minute window of key health stats and generates a report users can share with a health care provider – a great tool for capturing physiological data anytime you’re feeling off your baseline.

The D2 Mach 1 features 30+ built-in indoor and GPS sports apps with favorites that include walking, running, cycling, pool swimming, hiking, advanced strength training
and more. It’s even preloaded with SkiView™ maps and more than 42,000 golf courses from around the world. Keep fitness feeling fresh with preloaded workouts on the watch, preset workouts available for download from the Garmin Connect™ app, or create customizable workouts by choosing from over 1,400 exercises.

All-day connection and convenience

Pilots can keep essentials on the wrist with built-in music (download up to 650
songs including playlists from Spotify®, Amazon Music, and Deezer), Garmin Pay™
contactless payments, and smart notifications for calls, texts, calendar reminders,
social media updates, breaking news stories and more. No service? No problem. Stay connected by pairing the D2 Mach 1 with a Garmin inReach® device to send preset messages to loved ones, toggle tracking or to initiate an SOS to the Garmin IERCC, a 24/7 staffed professional emergency response coordination center. Like all Garmin smartwatches, the D2 Mach 1 can be used with compatible Android or Apple® Smartphones. With a battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode and up to 24 hours with the Fly activity (GPS + Pulse Ox), pilots can prepare for takeoff without worrying about their next charge.

Garmin Smart Watch D2 Air X10

Garmin D2 watches are the only smart watches made exclusively for pilots, packed with powerful tools like GPS navigation, a worldwide airport database, and a built-in altimeter. Now the best-selling D2 Air is even better, with new voice assistant features and long battery life.

From contactless payments to adding music, this is the new and approved smart watch.

The D2 Air X10 offers the following features and so much more:

  • Get airport weather for preflight awareness
  • Navigate Direct-to nearby airports, and see airport and runway information
  • Automatically log flights, and wirelessly sync with your flyGarmin.com® account
  • Make calls from your wrist, and create or respond to text messages hands-free, courtesy of your paired smartphone’s voice assistant.
  • Smartwatch capabilities plus health and wellness features help keep you in tune with your day.
  • Bright AMOLED display and up to 7 days of battery life? Affirmative.

Testimonial from a Garmin employee:

Hi everyone,

I’m really excited about our latest aviator smartwatch, the D2 Air X10. I’ve been fortunate to have been here at Garmin from the debut of this product line beginning with the D2 Pilot Watch circa 2013. We’ve come a long way from that original version and D2 Air was my favorite pilot watch — until the D2 Air X10.

The D2 Air X10 has a 43mm watch case with a beautiful, round 1.3” AMOLED display. I can be clumsy with my watch at times so the Gorilla® Glass 3 tech that protects it has certainly helped me preserve the display from the occasional bump. Interface with the watch is done with the combination of a touchscreen and three stainless steel buttons. It is offered in the black or ivory case and silicon band options pictured. Should you prefer a different style, it fits an industry standard 20 mm quick release band format. Garmin offers a large selection to choose from.

It’s amazing how much hardware is packed in this light and slim package. In addition to on-board GPS, it also includes a built-in baro adjustable altimeter and compass for use with the HSI. It also hosts an on-board heart rate and pulse oximeter.

One attribute that sets the Garmin D2 series of watches apart from any other smartwatch, is the built-in worldwide airport database. The database coupled with the on-board GPS provides the ability to navigate to any airport in the database without the need for any other device. In an emergency, having a GPS ready to go on my wrist is a lot more convenient than my old GPSMAP 12 in my flight bag.

While wirelessly connected to my iPhone, I routinely use the current METAR weather data on the home screen to understand what’s happening at the airport just before departure without having to reach into my pocket for my phone. Likewise, for pre-flight planning, it’s just as easy to flip through the TAFs to understand the weather ahead. While flying at altitude, I routinely check in on my blood oxygen level using the on-board pulse oximeter. There are a lot of other helpful features, like Garmin Pilot connectivity and automatic flight logging.

Beyond the pilot-focused features, the watch boasts all the modern smartwatch capabilities you’d expect. A new capability offers the ability to initiate and answer a phone call from the watch while your phone is in your pocket. You can also interact with Siri or equivalent digital assistant. Like it did from the first watch, it receives notifications, like text messages, from your phone.

I am a runner and use the watch to track every run. The stats on the companion Garmin Connect app are interesting. My favorite stat is my fitness age, which usually shaves about 20 years off my age  My 13-year-old son really likes to create family step challenges which can be tracked by the app as well. The D2 Air X10 offers a wealth of other GPS-based activities like golf, cycling, swimming as well as health features, like animated, on-screen workouts that are easy to follow along for cardio, strength, yoga and more.

I didn’t think I would use the Garmin Pay feature, until it saved me some time after my workouts. I typically run without my phone and wallet so paying with my phone for a coffee on the way back in is incredibly quick and efficient.

I really enjoy the battery life on my D2 Air. With regular flights and running, I can go days without charging. The D2 Air X10 improves battery life with up to 7 days in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours when continuously using GPS and Pulse Ox while flying.

I’m excited to hear what you think.
