What is the Sikorsky Prize?

The Sikorsky Prize went to a Toronto Team

The Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition was established in 1980 by the American Helicopter Society (AHS) International. The award, the AHS Sikorsky Prize, was given for the first human powered helicopter (HPH) to meet a set of extremely challenging flight requirements.

The requirements to win the AHS Sikorsky Prize includes a flight duration of 60 seconds, reaching an altitude of 9.8 ft, and the aircraft hovering over a 10-by-10 meter (32.8-by-32.8 ft) square.

This year, the $250,000 Sikorsky Price was won by a Canadian engineering team.  The team is made up of University of Toronto students, alumni and volunteers. AeroVelo’s Atlas human powered helicopter made the cut inside a soccer center near Toronto.

The flight occurred June 13, and the announcement was made after videos of the flight were verified by the competition committee.

Where did all the technicians go?…. out on training

Here at Maxcraft, we are firm believers in constant professional development.  Making sure all of our technicians and staff receive ongoing training is how we stay abreast of the latest technology and practices. And with today’s technology changing faster than you can spell it, we take pride in making sure that our technicians understand are fully versed in the very latest and greatest that today’s avionics industry has to offer.

Rockwell Collins – Kelowna

Rockwell Collins is a pioneer in the design, production and support of innovative solutions in aerospace. They have electronics and products installed in the flight decks of nearly every air transport aircraft in the world. They are experts not only in flight-deck avionics, cabin electronics, mission communications, and information management, but also in training. On June 24th, Maxcraft technicians Ali and Mike attended a five day training session in Kelowna, BC.  This course covered operation and flight line maintenance of Pro Line 21 avionics systems focusing primarily on the Bombardier CL-605 Challenger, but including additional content for other platforms.

Honeywell – New Jersey

Senior technician Mickey was off on a Honeywell course in New Jersey, learning about the Honeywell Primus Epic EASy Avionics suite for the Dassault Falcon 900/2000.   Dassault and Honeywell created a revolutionary new flight deck designed for two things—the pilot and copilot.

Mickey got to get a good look at how the EASy system functions and what it entails. Included in the EASy system is the four 13 x 10-inch flat-panel, high-resolution, active-matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCD). Laid out in an efficient T formation, the design puts the primary display unit (PDU) right where it should be. In front of each pilot.

FAA – Kansas City

Michael,  from our Design Services department, attended a Avionics Product Certification 2 day workshop. run by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and hosted by our Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA). It was predicated on a discussion for a “case for safety” for general aviation aircraft retrofit avionics. More than 45 industry and regulatory officials were gathered in the Dan Derby Center for Professional Development at the AEA’s international headquarters in Lee’s Summit,Missouri, to take part in the workshop.

 Technician – In house

This week our technicians will get some training  from owner, president and general manager Daryl MacIntosh, to ensure we continue to meet all of the Transport Canada requirements as specified in our Maintenance Policy manual.

Topics include:

  • Understanding our standards on work order processes and flow
  • Clarity and documentation requirements of technicians and crew chiefs

Vendor mtg – US

Steve, our Director of Business Development, was off meeting with one of our key suppliers discussing future products, customer support, and product integration.

AEA Canada Regional mtg -Ottawa

This August Daryl and Wendy, our Quality assurance manager, will both be attending our  Aircraft Electrical Association’s Regional meeting in Ottawa for two days. They will hear about new products in the market, network with industry peers and discover the best practices for the aviation repair station industry.
What else did they do?

We gave them some internal technical training.  This training included work order process control.  This was to help all technicians to meet customer expectations and meet Transport Canada requirements.  Later on in the month we brought in a First Aid instructor to teach the staff the EFR Primary/Secondary care course as our staff are re-qualified every two years to be first responders in the work place.

Nothing in the Hangar? Really?

What?

We are empty.  Nothing.  De nada.  On the other hand, its the busiest we have ever been.  All of our technicians are out and about.

Some of our technicians are on courses to gain more knowledge on the newest technology for the various types of aircraft out there.  With aviation there is always so much to learn!

We also have a couple of technicians in Langley and in Richmond.  Aircraft couldn’t get to us, so we went to the aircraft.  Maxcraft is one of the few avionics shops that can send any of our staff, from technicians to design services, to the aircraft.
