New G5 Electronic Flight Instrument for experimental aircraft

G5 EFIMaxcraft is proud to introduce the new product by Garmin Team X. The new G5 electronic flight instrument for experimental amateur-built and light sport aircraft.

This compact and cost-effective product delivers exceptional performance and reliability serving as either a back-up instrument to G3X or other EFIS systems, or as a standalone primary flight instrument with optional autopilot mode annunciation. It boasts a bright, 3.5-inch sunlight readable liquid crystal display with built-in GPS and displays attitude, ground track, altitude, airspeed, groundspeed, vertical speed, slip/skid, lateral course deviation, vertical deviation as well as incorporating a dedicated HSI page.

The easy to install G5 is suitable for installation in place of a standard 3-1/8-inch (79.4 mm.) flight instrument, and an optional four-hour back-up batter can be included with an installation to provide pilots with added assurance in the event of an aircraft electrical failure. The flight instrument measures 3-inches in depth when paired with the back-up battery and 2.1-inches without the battery; it also incorporates pitot and static inputs that easily integrate with the aircraft’s existing pitot/static system.

G5 Cockpit integration

The fully integrated G5 serves as a dissimilar flight instrument when paired with G3X and G3X Touch glass flight displays. In the unlikely event of a G3X ADAHRS failure, the G5 doubles as a redundant ADAHRS source, which can supply the appropriate air data, attitude and heading information to G3X displays. Further expanding its redundant capabilities, autopilot mode annunciation can also display on the G5 flight instrument in the event of a G3X display failure. G3X customers can also leverage the existing G3X magnetometer for heading information, alleviating the need to calibrate and install a separate magnetometer. Pilots who have configured airspeed bugs within their G3X system will notice the same airspeed configurations are displayed on the G5. Depending on ambient cockpit lighting, the G5 display automatically dims and brightens independently from G3X to ensure the display can be easily viewed in all lighting environments. A dedicated rotary knob allows for easy adjustments to altitude and heading bugs, as well as barometric altitude settings, which automatically syncs with the G3X or G3X Touch flight displays.

Further expanding the utility of a standard back-up display, the G5 can be paired with theGMC 307 or GMC 305 autopilot mode controllers and GSA 28 autopilot servos to serve as a standalone autopilot solution, delivering a simple and cost-effective avionics suite.

When paired with these systems, G5 displays autopilot mode annunciation alongside primary flight instrumentation. If paired with a Garmin portable such as the aera 660 or aera 796/795, the portable can easily be connected via the serial port on the G5 to allow the autopilot to couple laterally to a flight plan and vertically to a VNAV descent profile. With or without a G3X display, the G5 retains the capability to provide back-up or standalone autopilot functionality, including the ability to fly coupled GPS approaches when paired with a compatible IFR navigator. Additional autopilot modes are selectable from the GMC 307 and GMC 305 including heading, pitch, roll, altitude hold, vertical speed hold and airspeed hold. While the autopilot is engaged, airspeed protection is also provided. Additionally, Level Mode is supported, which engages the autopilot to bring the aircraft to level flight.

Similar to features found within other Garmin products, patented Smart Airspace™ is included in the aera 660 feature set. Smart Airspace highlights the airspace nearest the aircraft’s current altitude and de-emphasizes non-pertinent airspace so pilots can quickly identify their location relative to the airspace around them.
Using the optional global navigation database and many regional charting options, the aera 660 provides worldwide versatility. The aera 660 is available in 4 regional versions with select regional data preloaded for North America, South America, Atlantic and Pacific regions. While each version is only available for purchase from Garmin in the corresponding region, regional databases can be purchased for any unit from any region. For pilots in Europe, the Atlantic version of the aera 660 includes the new Enhanced Basemap, which provides VFR operators with more visual landmarks and intersections that are often used when contacting air traffic control. Additionally, when selecting a street or intersection on the moving map of the aera, street names populate so it’s easier to identify aircraft location while navigating over an urban or unfamiliar environment.

aera 660dHelicopter Optimization

The aera 660 contains built-in features tailored to helicopter operators, including Garmin WireAware™ wire-strike avoidance technology. WireAware overlays power line locations and relative altitude information on the moving map and provides both aural and visual alerting when operating near power lines. Altitude display is offered in both mean sea level (MSL) and above ground level (AGL), so they are easier to identify relative to the aircraft flight path. The standard obstacle database contains Hazardous Obstacle Transmission (HOT) lines, which typically include those that span rivers, canyons, valleys or those that are within the vicinity of airports. Obstacle databases with comprehensive power line coverage and HOT lines are also available for the U.S. and portions of Canada and Mexico. Additionally, VFR helicopter chart coverage throughout eight major metropolitan areas within the U.S. depict helicopter airways and routes, heliports with associated frequency and lighting capabilities, NAVAID information and obstructions. Coverage for the Gulf of Mexico is also available, which includes offshore oil drilling platforms and more. Operators may also incorporate City Navigator® NT street maps to enable address look-up functions within the aera to easily navigate to street intersections during off-airport operations.

Maxcraft Avionics Receives FAA  STC for installation of the SkyWatch HP SKY899 TCAS-I  in the Beech 200/B200 and 300/B300 KingAir Series

Vancouver, BC, January 2016 – Maxcraft Avionics Ltd announced that they have received  FAA Validation of their Transport Canada STC SH15-43 (FAA STC SA03641NY) for installation of the SKY899 TCAS-1 System or upgrade of existing SKY497 Skywatch TAS to SKY899 TCAS-I in the Beech 200/200C/B200/B200C/300/B300/B300C KingAir Series.

The SKY899 Traffic Collision Avoidance System monitors the airspace around the aircraft and advises the crew when to look for transponder equipped aircraft that may pose a threat. Traffic information on the existing Sandel ST3400 display generally includes; range, relative bearing, relative altitude and closure rate. Calculating eight most threatening aircraft in range, the SKY899 provides Closest Point of Approach (CPA), Other Traffic (OT), Proximity Advisory (PA) and a single level of threat advisory known as a Traffic Advisory (TA) all by graphical depiction and audible warning for Traffic Advisories.

This installation approval leverages itself on existing SKY 497 TAS installations by re-using the approved NY-164 antenna installation for the NY-156 TCAS-I Antenna. Where an existing Skywatch WX1000/WX1000+ Display is existing, that display may be retained for display of Stormscope and Traffic Advisory in addition to the TCAS-I level display on the Sandel ST3400 TAWS-A/RMI Indicator.
